asking a question about external axis

Hi,friends,I have a question which maybe very easy.

Sometimes,I see a high frequency of use a word"external axis".And sometimes,I have ignored this word.Now,would someone give some information about this word and give some example : when why how to use this word?

External axis = axis controlled by the robot controller but external to the robot, e.g. track motion, positioner, turntable.
